BACK TO ´69 (I)

He de reconocer que fue un gran viaje aquél realizado por USA en 2008. Sin embargo, todo comenzó bastante mal. La reserva del viaje la hicimos mi chica y yo, pero por circunstancias de la vida a la hora de hacer el viaje, no sólo ya no tenía chica, sino que tampoco trabajo (es lo que tiene reservar con mucha antelación). Crisis económica y sentimental, vamos, lo mejor para empezar cualquier viaje. Podía haberlo anulado, como ella hizo, pero decidí continuar y gracias a eso viví una gran experiencia que, a través de la música que la iluminó, pretendo compartir con vosotros. 
I must admit that it was a great trip by USA in 2008. However, it started badly. The booking of the trip was made by my girlfriend and I, but life circumstances,  when the trip day arrrives, not only I had no girl, but neither work (maybe we made the book too long in advance). Economic and emotional crisis, what better way to start any trip. I could have canceled, as she did, but I decided to continue and thanks to that it was a great experience that, through music that lit it up, I would try to share with you.

En la llegada a Nueva York el paso de los trámites aduaneros se llevó a cabo con alguna dificultad, ya que fui de esos pocos elegidos que tienen una "entrevista personal" aparte antes de recibir el visado de entrada. No se si por mis apellidos, o por mi pobre inglés, pero en fin, se pasó. El hotel cercano a Central Park en el que me alojé estaba bastante bien, aunque sin estridencias. A partir de ahí me esperaban 5 días para conocer la ciudad, y digo bien la ciudad, porque eso es New York, la ciudad. Todo lo que en el mundo se puede ver, allí se ve. Todo es diferente pero nada se te hace extraño. Todo encaja, desde un tipo llamémoslo gótico (no se si ir por la calle vestido de conde drácula se puede denominar así) a hindúes con túnicas y turbantes, o judíos ortodoxos jasídicos con sus sombreros anchos y tirabuzones, bandas urbanas, ricachones que van en helicóptero al trabajo, mendigos que arrastran carros y duermen bajo cartones. Además de los típicos taxis amarillos, todo tipo de vehículos, desde una limusina rosa hasta una calesa, pasando por un camión inmenso cargado de troncos. Una iglesia de reminiscencia gótica, como la de Saint Patrick, coexiste en perfecta armonía con inmensos rascacielos de cristal y metal en los que se refleja. Eso es Nueva York. Contrastes continuos.

On arrival in New York over the customs formalities are carried out with some difficulty. I was one of those few selected  who have a "personal interview" apart before getting the entry visa. Not if my last name, or my poor English, but anyway, it happened. The hotel near Central Park where I stayed was pretty good, although without fanfare. From there I had 5 days to explore the city, and I mean the city, because that is New York: The City. Everything in the world you can see, there is. Everything is different but nothing makes you stranger. Everything fits, from a guy call it gothic (I don´t know if I can call this way somebody who goes down the street dressed like Count Dracula) Hindu robes and turbans, or Hasidic Orthodox Jews with their big hats and ringlets, urban gangs, rich men ranging in helicopter to work, dragging carts and beggars sleeping under cardboard. Besides the typical yellow taxis, all types of vehicles, from a pink limousine to a carriage, passing by a huge truck loaded with logs. A Neogothic church like St. Patrick, coexisting in perfect harmony with huge skyscrapers of glass and metal in which it is reflected. That's New York. Continuous contrasts.

Fue volviendo de la visita a la Estatua de la Libertad el segundo día cuando, a la altura de TRIBECA, vi aquella tienda de discos de ocasión. Más que verla, al principio la oí. Sonaba Tom Petty. Si escucháis el tema entenderéis porque tuve que entrar.
I was returning from a visit to the Statue of Liberty on the second day when, at the height of TRIBECA, I saw that record store. More to see, at first I heard. Tom Petty sounded. If you hear the song, you will understand because I had to go.

Era del estilo de las de Candem Town en Londres, un poco oscura, algo abarrotada, con fotos antiguas de Hendrix, Creedence, Van Halen, Nirvana, los Stones, una grande de Frank Zappa, etc. 
It was the style of Camden Town in London, a little dark, somewhat cluttered with old photos of Hendrix, Creedence, Van Halen, Nirvana, the Stones, one big of Frank Zappa, etc.

Además del dependiente que tendría unos 40 años, estaba colocando discos un señor de unos 70, que me llamó la atención porque se parecía mucho a Rossi, no al gran Valentino, sino al cantante de Status Quo, Francis, pelo largo y blanco aunque con entradas prominentes por delante, pendiente y aspecto circunspecto, como muy concentrado en su trabajo. 
Besides the salesman who was about 40, he was placing discs a man of about 70, which caught my attention because it seems he was Rossi, not the great Valentino, but the singer of Status Quo, Francis, long hair and white, earrings and circumspect aspect. He was very focused on his work.

Habría además cuatro o cinco personas que como yo habían entrado a curiosear. Me puse a ojear y encontré "Tommy" de The Who en una edición moderna. Por si no la conocéis, es una ópera-rock, de las primeras que se hicieron. Os resumo un poco la trama:
There would also be four or five people who like me had come to gawk. I started to browse and found "Tommy" by The Who in a modern edition. In case you did not know, is a rock opera, the first to be made. I summarize it a little:

Trata de un niño que por un trauma generado en sus relaciones familiares queda sordomudo y ciego. Sin embargo, desarrolla de tal manera su sentido del tacto que acaba percibiendo las cosas por las vibraciones que transmiten, convirtiéndose en un extremadamente hábil jugador de pinball (tema Pinball Wizard). Llega a poderse percibir a sí mismo (sus propias vibraciones) mediante su exposición ante los espejos de la casa. Al niño supuestamente le intenta curar una prostituta con fama de curandera, mediante alucinógenos (tema Acid Queen) pero no lo consigue.
There was a child who, by a trauma in their family relationships, is deaf and blind. However he was able to develop so much him sense of touch sensing. He gets to perceive the things because of their vibrations, making it an extremely skilled player pinball (song Pinball Wizard). He was able to perceive himself (his own vibrations) by exposure to the mirrors in the house. The boy allegedly tries to cure a prostitute with a reputation of healer, using hallucinogens (song Acid Queen) but fails.

Es entonces cuando un médico (tema There´s a Doctor) establece que el problema de Tommy es psicosomático, aunque no determina ni el desencadenante ni la solución. Esta llegará casualmente cuando la madre, harta de la obsesión de Tommy por los espejos, decide romper todos los de la casa. Ahí recupera todos los sentidos Tommy (tema I`m Free). Esta recuperación milagrosa trasciende haciendo de Tommy un líder mesiánico (recordad estamos a finales de los 60). Viendo el negocio, su tío organiza un campamento con los seguidores de Tommy (tema Tommy´s Holidays Camp), pero son tales las exigencias de éste a sus acólitos, hasta el punto de taparles ojos, oídos y boca intentando que ellos vivan las experiencias que él ha tenido, que estos acaban por abandonarle. Tommy vuelve de nuevo a su vida interior sólo pero no triste. En el fondo siempre fue feliz así.
It´s then when a doctor ( There's a doctor song) states that the problem of Tommy is psychosomatic, but does not determine or the trigger or the solution. This will happened when the mother, tired of Tommy's obsession by mirrors, decides to break all in the house. Then Tommy recovers all senses (song I`m Free). This miraculous recovery transcends making Tommy becames a messianic leader (remember we are late 60's). Viewing business, his uncle organizes a camp followers Tommy (song Tommy's Holidays Camp), but such are the demands of it to his acolytes, to the point of covering their eyes, ears and mouth trying they lives the experiences he had. That people eventually leave him. Tommy returns to his inner life lonely but not sad. He was always happy this way.

Estaba recreándome en el hallazgo y en mis propios recuerdos sobre el disco, cuando escuché la voz de Rossi (yo en mi imaginación había empezado a llamarle así) que me dijo: - Tiene usted en sus manos posiblemente unos de los mejores discos, de uno de los mejores años de la historia de la música- Busqué el año en el disco porque no lo tenía muy claro. 
I was reveling in the discovery and my own memories on the disk, when I heard the voice of Rossi (me in my imagination had begun to call him that) who said: - You have in your hands possibly one of the best albums of one of the best years in the history of music-I searched the year on the disk because it wasn`t very clear to me.

-1969-, dijo el hombre, antes de que yo lo encontrara. -Venga por aquí dijo y yo le seguí, siempre he sido poco precavido. 
-1969- Said the man, before I found him. Come here.  said and I followed him, I haven´t always been very cautious.

Entramos en una especie de trastienda en uno de cuyos rincones aparecían clasificados unos discos de vinilo sencillamente espectaculares. Me acordé del libro "La sombra del Viento" de Ruiz Zafón y su "paraíso de libros perdidos". Aquí era el paraíso de los "vinilos" perdidos.
We went into a sort of back room in one of its corners appeared classified simply spectacular disks of vinyl. I remembered the book "The Shadow of the Wind" by Ruiz Zafón and his "paradise lost books". Here was the paradise lost "vinyls".

-1969.. veamos..- dijo Rossi buscando entre los algo polvorientos discos. La pobre iluminación dada por una única bombilla hacía difícil la operación, - debe buscar como Tommy, por el tacto, pensé

- Mi hijo siempre me critica - dijo señalando con un movimiento de cabeza al hombre del mostrador- por estar enseñando mi colección particular, pero que le voy a hacer si estoy orgulloso de ella. Puede que no todos los discos que hay en ella tuvieran éxito pero creo que casi todos lo merecieron y la mayoría con el tiempo lo consiguieron.-
- My son always criticizes me - he said, pointing with a nod to man the counter to be teaching my private collection, but I am going to do because if I'm proud of it. It may not all discs in it succeed but I think almost everyone deserved and most got it.

y continuó - Quizá una de las cosas que más me impresionó de ese año 1969 tuvo que ver con una canción de este disco publicado un año antes- dijo mientras me enseñaba el disco blanco de The Beatles. - El tema es Helter Skelter. - Era agosto, yo tenía 24 años y andaba por San Francisco convaleciente de las heridas de guerra (luego me contó que había estado en Vietnam y que había sido herido en la batalla de Hamburger Hill).
and continued - Perhaps one of the things that impressed me most about that 1969 had to do with a song of this album published a year before-said as he showed me the white album by The Beatles. - The subject is Helter Skelter. - It was August, I was 24 and was walking in San Francisco recovering from war wounds (then he told me he had been in Vietnam and had been wounded in the Battle of Hamburger Hill).

 La ciudad hervía: amor libre, música, LSD, lucha contra lo establecido, el flower power... La guerra no tenía sentido y todo el mundo lo veía. Fue entonces cuando un tal Charles Manson ordenó a los miembros de su secta (su llamada "familia") asaltar una casa en el 10050 de Cielo Drive, en Los Ángeles, y asesinar a todo el que estuviera dentro. En esa casa vivía Roman Polanski aunque él no estaba. Sin embargo si que estaban su mujer, la actriz Sharon Tate embarazada de ocho meses, y unos invitados. Todos fueron asesinados.
The city seethed: free love, music, LSD, fight against the established, flower power ... The war was pointless and everyone saw it. It was then when someone called Charles Manson ordered members of his sect (the so-called "family") raiding a house in the 10050 Cielo Drive in Los Angeles, and kill whoever was inside. In this house lived Roman Polanski though he was not. However it was his wife, actress Sharon Tate , who was eight months pregnant, and some guests. All were killed.

Charles Manson, quería iniciar una guerra racial e intentó que los indicios apuntaran a que habían sido grupos radicales de raza negra,  para provocar la reacción de los blancos y comenzar esa guerra. El tema de los Beatles, era para él casi como un himno, lo escuchaba noche y día y lo interpretó como premonitorio de la guerra inminente entre blancos y negros que iba a asolar el mundo-. Aquellos años 60, aquella época de paz y amor, termino ese 8 de agosto de 1969 con esos despiadados asesinatos. ya nada volvió a ser igual.
Charles Manson, wanted to start a race war and tried that the evidence will point to black radical groups looking for the reaction of whites and begin the war. The song of the Beatles, was for him almost like a hymn, listened night and day and interpreted as foreshadowing the impending war between blacks and whites would ravage the world. Those 60's, that time of peace and love, was ended this August 8, 1969 with these ruthless killings. and nothing was ever the same.

Oyendo esta explicación, es cuando entendí el por qué del comienzo  de la versión de esta canción que hace U2 en "Rattle and Hum".  En el inicio Bono, dice: "está canción se la robó Charles Manson a Los Beatles. Ahora nosotros se la robamos a él". Dejo además de estas dos, la versión de Aerosmith, que me parece la más redonda. Disfrutad :
On hearing this explanation, is when I understood the beginning of the cover made years later by U2 in "Rattle and Hum". Listen these two covers and in addition , the Aerosmith´s cover, which it seems to me the better. enjoy:

- Pero ¿que significa exactamente Helter Skelter?- pregunté. -

- Literalmente, es un tobogán infantil en espiral, pero el sentido de la expresión es desorden, decadencia, caos. Se dice que el tema lo compuso McCartney buscando un sonido "salvaje y estridente". Buscaba experimentar y seguramente sin darse cuenta puede que descubriera el punk.

- Literally, it is a child spiral slide, but the meaning of the term is disorder, decay, chaos. It is said that the song was composed by McCartney looking for a "wild and raucous" sound. He was trying to experiment and surely inadvertently he may discover the punk.

Iba a seguir con los Beatles sacando "Abbey Road", este sí del 69. Ya sabéis aquel en el que salen los miembros del grupo pasando un paso de cebra en el cruce de esa calle con Grove End. Me hizo fijarme en VW Beetle aparcado al fondo.y me contó  que, a raíz del éxito del disco y de su portada, fue desprovisto de su matrícula en numerosas ocasiones por los fans de la banda, y que luego fue vendido en una subasta a un precio importante. Las placas de la calle también sufrieron en ocasiones el fenómeno fan. También como curiosidad aparece un turista americano que no se dio cuenta hasta que no se vio en la portada del disco. No puedo reproducir aquí la portada del disco por copyright pero invito a todos a que veáis esos detalles.
He was going to continue taking the Beatles "Abbey Road", the other of 69. You know, that in which group members depart, passing a pedestrian crossing at the junction of this road with Grove End. I was noticing about a VW Beetle parked behind them and he told to me that, following the success of the album and its cover, the car was stripped of its registration on numerous occasions by fans of the band, and it was later sold at auction a significant price. Plates Street also suffered occasionally fan phenomenon. Also as a curiosity an American tourist appears in the photo. He did not realize of that until he saw the cover of the disc lately when he went to buy it. I can not reproduce here the album cover by copyright, but I invite all of you to see those details.

- ¿no fue ese el año que dieron el concierto en la azotea?.- Sí- contestó. - En el edificio de Apple  Corp en Saville Row (Londres). Fué el último concierto de la banda, el treinta de enero de 1969. Finalizó con el desalojo de la banda por la policía, pero supuso una innovación que fue seguida por otros, U2, Red Hot Chilli Peppers.. 
- Was not this the year that gave the concert on the roof .- Yes replied. - In the Apple Corp building in Saville Row (London). It was the last concert of the band, January 30, 1969. He finished with the removal of the band by the police, but it was an innovation which was followed by others, U2, Red Hot Chilli Peppers ..

Seguimos viendo discos. Me fijé en el "Born on the Bajou" de Creedence Clearwater Revival y en los de Led Zeppelin I y II. Pero también estaban los Rolling, Cream, Dylan, Neil Young.. y una cosa que me llamó especialmente la atención; una grabación de la banda sonora de "Hair", pero no la de la película de 1979 de Milos Forman, sino la de la obra de teatro previa. Musical antibelicista por excelencia..  Lo que pasó con estos y otros discos, os lo cuento en la próxima entrada. La música os la voy anticipando.
We continue seeing records. I noticed the "Born on the Bajou" Creedence Clearwater Revival and the Led Zeppelin I and II. But also there were the Rolling Stones, Cream, Dylan, Neil Young .. and one thing in particular caught my attention; A recording of the soundtrack of "Hair", but not that of the 1979 film of Milos Forman, but the previous theater show. Antiwar classsic work .. What happened to these and other records, I tell you in the next post. The music you I'm anticipating.
