¡Saludos a todos los amantes del hard rock !. Con este blog que aquí comienza pretendo compartir con todos vosotros aquellos temas que más me han hecho disfrutar dentro de este género musical tan denostado nuestro. Frente a la imagen tradicional de pinchos, calaveras, melenas, gritos y monstruos que normalmente tienen los profanos mi idea es profundizar en el virtuosismo musical y vocal que hay detrás de esa estética particular. Es cierto, que como en todos los géneros musicales, hay cosas poco recomendables. A mí particularmente no me gustan todos aquellos en los que se sustituye la voz de un cantante por voces de ultratumba o sonidos guturales. No me gustan y por eso no haría ninguna recomendación en ese sentido.

Greetings to all fans of hard rock !. With this blog that starts here I intend to share with you all those songs that I have done most enjoy in this genre much maligned us. In front of the traditional image of spikes, skulls, manes, shouts and monsters that are normally profane my idea is to deepen into the musical and vocal virtuosity behind that particular aesthetic. It is true that, as in all genres, there are unsavory things. I especially do not like all those in which the voice of a singer is replaced by voices from beyond the grave or grunting. En cuanto a cómo estructurar el
blog, le he dado muchas vueltas. Una idea podría haber sido recomendar temas de
general aceptación fácilmente reconocibles, pero como me planteo aportar algo a
la vez que aprendo, intentaré hacer con carácter semanal recomendaciones
de bandas no tan conocidas por una
parte, y por otra, cuando trate clásicos del género, intentaré aportar
información que pueda resultar curiosa o que no sea conocida. Cada semana, me
centraré en una banda y, a partir de ahí, incluiré enlaces para escuchar la
música recomendada en youtube o en spotify. También intentaré establecer
comparativas con otras de similar estilo de esa u otras épocas. Este sistema, lo escuche una vez en una
emisora y me gustó bastante. Por desgracia, no debió ser muy comercial porque
no duró mucho en antena, o al menos yo le perdí la pista.

One idea might have been to recommend topics generally accepted easily recognizable, but as I wont contribute something while I learn, I will try to do maybe weekly some recommendations of lesser known bands on the one hand and on the other, when trying classics, I will try to provide information that may be curious or not known. Each week, I will focus on a band and, from there, I will include links recommended to listen on youtube or spotify music. I will also try to establish comparisons with other similar style of that or other times. This system, once heard on a radio and was quite pleased. Unfortunately, it can not have been very commercial because it did not last long on the air, or at least I lost track.

Comencemos.
En mi búsqueda en
spotify de grupos nuevos para mi lista de rock progresivo actual, encontré un
grupo llamado Flying Colors. Me gustaron varios temas y decidí indagar. Lo
primero que descubrí es que estaba compuesto por dos inmensos músicos Mike Portnoy a la batería (ex Dream Theater), uno de los mejores bateristas que he
escuchado nunca y al que recomiendo encarecidamente ver en vivo, y Steve Morse
(ex Deep Purple), buenísimo guitarrista, extremadamente técnico en su manera de
tocar, al que también tuve la suerte de poder ver en vivo en su época de DP en
Madrid. Les acompañan el bajista Dave La Rue, Neal Morse, a los teclados y voz y
Casey McPherson como vocalista principal y guitarrista. No son especialmente
duros, no es un metal progresivo, su estilo es más del tipo rock progresivo aunque pretenden dar un "toque contemporáneo" como explican en su web. Una de sus fuentes quizá sea el grupo Dixie Dregs de mediados de los 70,
banda en la que formaron en su día tanto Steve Morse como Dave La Rue, otra Transatlantic, banda de Neal y Portnoy, aunque
a mí, en la búsqueda de ese toque contemporáneo del que hablan, me parece apreciar otras influencias.

In my search for new groups spotify for my current list of progressive rock, I found a group called Flying Colors. I liked and decided investigate several issues. The first thing I discovered is that consisted of two immense musicians Mike Portnoy on drums (ex-Dream Theater), one of the best drummers I've ever heard and I highly recommend to see live, and Steve Morse (ex-Deep Purple) terrific guitarist, extremely technical in his playing, which also had the good fortune to see live in their time of DP in Madrid. They are accompanied by bassist Dave La Rue, Neal Morse, on keyboards and vocals and Casey McPherson as lead vocalist and guitarist. They are not particularly hard, it is not a progressive metal, its style is more progressive rock type but are intended to give a contemporary twis as they say in their web. One of its sources is perhaps the Dixie Dregs group of mid 70s band that formed in his day both Steve Morse and Dave La Rue, another Transatlantic, band Neal and Portnoy, although it seems to me that in the search of this contemporary touch, to appreciate other influences.

llama “A place in your world”, tema clásico de progresivo en el que creo que es reconocible la calidad individual del desempeño de cada uno de los miembros. Echadle un

En cuanto a la confección de la banda, podría decirse que es el clásico "supergrupo". Músicos grandes con multitud de proyectos individuales y colectivos son fichados por un manager o un productor ejecutivo que les explica su idea. En este caso fue el productor ejecutivo Bill Evans el que propició el encuentro entre Steve y Neal. Steve llevó a LaRue, Neal a Portnoy y Portnoy a McPherson. A partir de ahí, entre sesiones skype y cortas pero intensas reuniones, se llegó al resultado final que podéis escuchar.
As for the making of the band, you could say that is the "supergroup" classic. Great musicians with many individual and collective projects are signed to a manager or an executive producer who explains his idea. Here was the executive producer Bill Evans who led the meeting between Steve and Neal. Steve took LaRue, Neal took Portnoy, and Portnoy took McPherson. From there, among skype sessions and short but intense meetings, it was the end result that you can hear.
En el siguiente tema que voy a recomendar me parece apreciar similitudes con un grupo que arrasa en la actualidad y que es un espectáculo en todos los sentidos aunque no es de nuestro género (ni de ninguno en particular), Muse. El tema se llama “Mask Machine”:

También me gustó bastante “Shoulda, Coulda, Woulda..”, más potente. Quizá me recuerda un poco a Foo Fighters.

En directo, son de ese tipo de grupos sin estridencias escénicas, pero que hacen disfrutar por la calidad de las actuaciones de sus componentes a las que antes me refería. El que pongo a continuación me encantó, la verdad. Se llama "All Falls Down" :

Una vez hube escuchado estos temas y otros, decidí someter todo esto "a juicio". A tres amigos y a mí nos gusta formar una tertulia en una cafetería librería estilo vintage del centro de Madrid. Luego tenemos a Rafa, el más heavy en el sentido más estricto del término. Le encantan Judas, Iron Maiden, Metallica, los AOR ochenteros clásicos estilo Def Leppard y la gente nueva estilo Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for my Valentine. etc.

Por último está Nuria, la más joven, que se decanta por grupos más de la esfera grunge y post grunge o alternativo, destacando Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam. Todos estamos en esa franja de edad que determina la entrada en la llamada MIDLIFE CRISIS que da nombre a esta historia.
La conversación al respecto de Flying Colors se podría resumir así :

When I had heard these issues and others, I decided to submit this to"trial." Three friends and I like to be a gathering at a bookstore vintage style cafe in central Madrid. As the site is very quiet, it is ideal to form our "council of elders" particular. Permit me the present: On one side is Carlos, the most classic of all fans and all groups of the late 60s and early 70s, namely Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, ACDC, Rolling Stones, Rush, Yes, etc.
Then we have Rafa, the heaviest in the strictest sense. She loves Judas, Iron Maiden, Metallica, classic eighties style AOR Def Leppard, and people new style Avenged Sevenfold, Bullet for my Valentine. etc. Finally we have Nuria, the youngest, who opts for groups over the grunge and post grunge sphere, highlighting Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Pearl Jam. We're all in this age that determines entry into the call MIDLIFE CRISIS that gives name to this story. The conversation about Flying Colors can be summarized as follows:

C: Me gustan bastante, sobretodo por la aportación de S.Morse, que me parece muy solvente aunque no tan genial como para hacer olvidar a R.Blackmore en los Purple.Como crítica, diría que buscando explotar la veta comercial y que nadie sea más que el otro, coartan algo las individualidades de sus miembros. Suele pasar en este tipo de grupos Si quieres ver a los "verdaderos" Steve Morse y La Rue mete el tema de Dixie Dregs, "Twiggs Approved", que anda por youtube.

C: I like pretty, especially by providing S.Morse, which I find very reliable though not so great as to forget R.Blackmore in Purple. As a critic, I would say that seeking to exploit the commercial grain and to keep that no one be more than the other, somewhat restrict the individuality of its members. It happens in this kind of groups If you want to see the "real" Steve Morse and La Rue plays the theme of Dixie Dregs, "Twiggs Approved", who goes by youtube.
R: A mí me llama la atención lo bueno que es el bajista. Tanto en Flyng, como en Dixie como en Steve Morse Band, no tiene problemas en marcarse solos y en general en acaparar bastante protagonismo, lo cual en una banda en la que esté Portnoy, tiene mérito. No es muy habitual lo de los solos de bajo. Me vienen a la memoria algunos del desaparecido Cliff Burton de Metallica o algunos en vivo de Steve Harris de Maiden.

Desde el punto de vista negativo, me parecen un poco blandos, por lo que subiré un poco el tono en mis recomendaciones, empezaré por Anathema "Lost song part 1", me encanta el ritmo que marca la batería y el bajo y como va subiendo la intensidad al final, y para salir por la puerta grande la instrumental de Lincoln Brewster "Miraculum".
R: To me it strikes me how good bassist. Both Flyng, and Dixie and Steve Morse Band, has no problem with the solos and has generally quite grab prominence, which in a band that is Portnoy, has merit. It is not very common the bass solos in this kind of music. I was reminded of some of the late Cliff Burton of Metallica or some live Maiden Steve Harris ..
From a negative point of view, I look a bit soft, so I'll upload some tone in my recommendations, I will begin by Anathema "Lost song part 1", I love the pace set by the drums and bass as it rises intensity at the end, and "to exit through the front door" (spanish expression), instrumental Lincoln Brewster "Miraculum".

N: A mí, aunque no sea el estilo que más me va, me han gustado bastante "Mask Machine" y "Kayla". El que no me convence del todo es el cantante. Creo que es el más flojo de todos y el más fácilmente sustituible porque no tiene una voz muy personal que digamos.

N: For me, though not the style I will most have liked enough "Mask Machine" and "Kayla". That does not convince me at all is the singer. I think it's the weakest of all and the most easily replaceable because he has not a very personal voice.
As for recommendations, as it is progressive, I would recommend a couple of instrumentals Liquid Tension Experiment, one of the multiple formations Portnoy, alternative project to Dream Theater:

Por último, una curiosidad: Hay un tema que une los nombres de cuatro de los más grandes grupos de la historia de la música en un psicodélico video. Se llama "Pink Beatles in a Purple Zeppelin" (aunque en YouTube hay un pequeño error en el título. El autor es otro progresivo llamado Arjen Anthony Lucassen. Suena así de bien. Finally, a curiosity: There is a theme that unites the names of four of the biggest groups in music history in a psicodelic video. It's called "Pink Beatles in a Purple Zeppelin" (among i think there is a little mistake in the title in youtube). The author is Arjen Anthony Lucassen, another called progressive.
