He de reconocer que fue un gran viaje aquél realizado por USA en 2008. Sin embargo, todo comenzó bastante mal. La reserva del viaje la hicimos mi chica y yo, pero por circunstancias de la vida a la hora de hacer el viaje, no sólo ya no tenía chica, sino que tampoco trabajo (es lo que tiene reservar con mucha antelación). Crisis económica y sentimental, vamos, lo mejor para empezar cualquier viaje. Podía haberlo anulado, como ella hizo, pero decidí continuar y gracias a eso viví una gran experiencia que, a través de la música que la iluminó, pretendo compartir con vosotros.
I must admit that it was a great trip by USA in 2008. However, it started badly. The booking of the trip was made by my girlfriend and I, but life circumstances, when the trip day arrrives, not only I had no girl, but neither work (maybe we made the book too long in advance). Economic and emotional crisis, what better way to start any trip. I could have canceled, as she did, but I decided to continue and thanks to that it was a great experience that, through music that lit it up, I would try to share with you.

En la llegada a Nueva York el paso de los trámites aduaneros se llevó a cabo con alguna dificultad, ya que fui de esos pocos elegidos que tienen una "entrevista personal" aparte antes de recibir el visado de entrada. No se si por mis apellidos, o por mi pobre inglés, pero en fin, se pasó. El hotel cercano a Central Park en el que me alojé estaba bastante bien, aunque sin estridencias. A partir de ahí me esperaban 5 días para conocer la ciudad, y digo bien la ciudad, porque eso es New York, la ciudad. Todo lo que en el mundo se puede ver, allí se ve. Todo es diferente pero nada se te hace extraño. Todo encaja, desde un tipo llamémoslo gótico (no se si ir por la calle vestido de conde drácula se puede denominar así) a hindúes con túnicas y turbantes, o judíos ortodoxos jasídicos con sus sombreros anchos y tirabuzones, bandas urbanas, ricachones que van en helicóptero al trabajo, mendigos que arrastran carros y duermen bajo cartones. Además de los típicos taxis amarillos, todo tipo de vehículos, desde una limusina rosa hasta una calesa, pasando por un camión inmenso cargado de troncos. Una iglesia de reminiscencia gótica, como la de Saint Patrick, coexiste en perfecta armonía con inmensos rascacielos de cristal y metal en los que se refleja. Eso es Nueva York. Contrastes continuos.

On arrival in New York over the customs formalities are carried out with some difficulty. I was one of those few selected who have a "personal interview" apart before getting the entry visa. Not if my last name, or my poor English, but anyway, it happened. The hotel near Central Park where I stayed was pretty good, although without fanfare. From there I had 5 days to explore the city, and I mean the city, because that is New York: The City. Everything in the world you can see, there is. Everything is different but nothing makes you stranger. Everything fits, from a guy call it gothic (I don´t know if I can call this way somebody who goes down the street dressed like Count Dracula) Hindu robes and turbans, or Hasidic Orthodox Jews with their big hats and ringlets, urban gangs, rich men ranging in helicopter to work, dragging carts and beggars sleeping under cardboard. Besides the typical yellow taxis, all types of vehicles, from a pink limousine to a carriage, passing by a huge truck loaded with logs. A Neogothic church like St. Patrick, coexisting in perfect harmony with huge skyscrapers of glass and metal in which it is reflected. That's New York. Continuous contrasts.
Fue volviendo de la visita a la Estatua de la Libertad el segundo día cuando, a la altura de TRIBECA, vi aquella tienda de discos de ocasión. Más que verla, al principio la oí. Sonaba Tom Petty. Si escucháis el tema entenderéis porque tuve que entrar.

Además del dependiente que tendría unos 40 años, estaba colocando discos un señor de unos 70, que me llamó la atención porque se parecía mucho a Rossi, no al gran Valentino, sino al cantante de Status Quo, Francis, pelo largo y blanco aunque con entradas prominentes por delante, pendiente y aspecto circunspecto, como muy concentrado en su trabajo.

There was a child who, by a trauma in their family relationships, is deaf and blind. However he was able to develop so much him sense of touch sensing. He gets to perceive the things because of their vibrations, making it an extremely skilled player pinball (song Pinball Wizard). He was able to perceive himself (his own vibrations) by exposure to the mirrors in the house. The boy allegedly tries to cure a prostitute with a reputation of healer, using hallucinogens (song Acid Queen) but fails.

Es entonces cuando un médico (tema There´s a Doctor) establece que el problema de Tommy es psicosomático, aunque no determina ni el desencadenante ni la solución. Esta llegará casualmente cuando la madre, harta de la obsesión de Tommy por los espejos, decide romper todos los de la casa. Ahí recupera todos los sentidos Tommy (tema I`m Free). Esta recuperación milagrosa trasciende haciendo de Tommy un líder mesiánico (recordad estamos a finales de los 60). Viendo el negocio, su tío organiza un campamento con los seguidores de Tommy (tema Tommy´s Holidays Camp), pero son tales las exigencias de éste a sus acólitos, hasta el punto de taparles ojos, oídos y boca intentando que ellos vivan las experiencias que él ha tenido, que estos acaban por abandonarle. Tommy vuelve de nuevo a su vida interior sólo pero no triste. En el fondo siempre fue feliz así.
It´s then when a doctor ( There's a doctor song) states that the problem of Tommy is psychosomatic, but does not determine or the trigger or the solution. This will happened when the mother, tired of Tommy's obsession by mirrors, decides to break all in the house. Then Tommy recovers all senses (song I`m Free). This miraculous recovery transcends making Tommy becames a messianic leader (remember we are late 60's). Viewing business, his uncle organizes a camp followers Tommy (song Tommy's Holidays Camp), but such are the demands of it to his acolytes, to the point of covering their eyes, ears and mouth trying they lives the experiences he had. That people eventually leave him. Tommy returns to his inner life lonely but not sad. He was always happy this way.

Estaba recreándome en el hallazgo y en mis propios recuerdos sobre el disco, cuando escuché la voz de Rossi (yo en mi imaginación había empezado a llamarle así) que me dijo: - Tiene usted en sus manos posiblemente unos de los mejores discos, de uno de los mejores años de la historia de la música- Busqué el año en el disco porque no lo tenía muy claro.
I was reveling in the discovery and my own memories on the disk, when I heard the voice of Rossi (me in my imagination had begun to call him that) who said: - You have in your hands possibly one of the best albums of one of the best years in the history of music-I searched the year on the disk because it wasn`t very clear to me.

Charles Manson, wanted to start a race war and tried that the evidence will point to black radical groups looking for the reaction of whites and begin the war. The song of the Beatles, was for him almost like a hymn, listened night and day and interpreted as foreshadowing the impending war between blacks and whites would ravage the world. Those 60's, that time of peace and love, was ended this August 8, 1969 with these ruthless killings. and nothing was ever the same.

Iba a seguir con los Beatles sacando "Abbey Road", este sí del 69. Ya sabéis aquel en el que salen los miembros del grupo pasando un paso de cebra en el cruce de esa calle con Grove End. Me hizo fijarme en VW Beetle aparcado al fondo.y me contó que, a raíz del éxito del disco y de su portada, fue desprovisto de su matrícula en numerosas ocasiones por los fans de la banda, y que luego fue vendido en una subasta a un precio importante. Las placas de la calle también sufrieron en ocasiones el fenómeno fan. También como curiosidad aparece un turista americano que no se dio cuenta hasta que no se vio en la portada del disco. No puedo reproducir aquí la portada del disco por copyright pero invito a todos a que veáis esos detalles.

Seguimos viendo discos. Me fijé en el "Born on the Bajou" de Creedence Clearwater Revival y en los de Led Zeppelin I y II.
