ALICE IN CHAINS







Banda integrada dentro del movimiento  Grunge, es decir aquel estilo musical de finales de los 80 y principios de los 90 que integra rock y punk,  y que surge en el estado de Washington, concretamente en Seattle. Fue alternativa a los movimientos hasta entonces predominantes en la esfera del rock: el Hair Metal de Bon Jovi o Europe, el heavy más clásico de Iron Maiden o Judas Priest, el trash de Metallica o Anthrax, o los fenómenos Guns`n`Roses, U2 y Queen.

Movimiento que produce cambios a todos los niveles. En la estética se pasa de cueros y tachuelas a simples camisetas y vaqueros o incluso a chaquetitas de lana, todo dentro de un cuidado estilo desaliñado. Los modelos de belleza pasan a ser Kurt Cobain, Johnny Deep o Kate Moss entre otros. Las letras también se transforman.  Se pasa de las típicas rockeras, es decir las basadas en el clásico lema de sexo, drogas y rock and roll, con alguna tierna de amor, a letras profundamente pesimistas y negativas sobre la vida, el amor, la sociedad, etc. La música también cambia. Se hace simplona y pegadiza, con un toque de desgarro, como dando a entender que no está preparada, sino que el intérprete, en su suplicio interior, se ha visto obligado a coger una guitarra y a improvisar. No hay virtuosismo. Las guitarras ya no están para hacer solos sino para crear la atmósfera opresiva necesaria para que cale lo que verdaderamente importa, el mensaje.


Nirvana Unplugged
Movement that produces changes at all levels. In aesthetic is passed leather and studs simple shirts and jeans or even wool cardigans, all within a carefully disheveled style. The beauty models become Kurt Cobain, Johnny Depp and Kate Moss among others. The letters are also transformed. They go from the typical rocking, items based on the classic theme of sex, drugs and rock and roll, with some tender love, to deeply pessimistic and negative lyrics about life, love, society, etc. The music also changes. It is simplistic and catchy, with a hint of tears, as if to say it is not ready, but the interpreter inside ordeal, was forced to pick up a guitar and improvise. No virtuosity. The guitars are no longer to make solos, but to create the oppressive atmosphere necessary for cale what really matters, the message.

 El motivo del éxito del movimiento es difícil de concretar, pero quizá sea debido a la frustración experimentada por la sociedad de la época; consumista, con dificultades económicas, con la droga y el SIDA como dramas... Es la sociedad de la llamada Generación X, fruto del baby boom de finales de los 60 y primeros 70. Una generación más preparada en teoría que sus padres, que ya manejaba ordenadores y consolas, pero que era incapaz de conseguir cosas fáciles para generaciones anteriores, como trabajo estable o casa donde vivir.

En este contexto se encuadra Alice in Chains. Música desgarrada y letras pesimistas les integran en el grunge. La armonía que consiguen al integrar dos voces durante grandes pasajes de cada canción les diferencian. Como ejemplo propongo un tema actual:

Es por tanto en Seattle, ciudad de la lluvia, donde se conocen Layne Staley y Jerry Cantrell y deciden formar esta banda que con el tiempo consiguiera vender catorce millones de discos sólo en USA. Se unen a Mike Starr y a Sean Kinney en el bajo y batería, y comienzan a funcionar por los locales de la
Jerry Cantrell.


zona hasta que son descubiertos por el productor Randy Hauser que les contrata para Columbia Records, y empiezan a publicar álbumes. El trabajo fundamental de composición lo lleva Cantrell. También aporta temas Staley, los más depresivos quizá dados sus problemas con las drogas. Sacan Facelift con éxitos como "We Die Young" , o el nominado a los grammy "Man in the Box" :
It is in Seattle, Rain City, where Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell meet and decide to form this band that eventually got sold fourteen million albums in the US alone. Joining Mike Starr and Sean Kinney on bass and drums, and begin to function by local area until they are discovered by producer Randy Hauser who hires them to Columbia Records, and began to publish albums. The fundamental work of composition leads Cantrell. It also provides songs Staley, perhaps the most depressing given their drug problems. Otros que me gustan : "Bleed the Freak" o "Sea of Sorrow". En ellos se puede apreciar la calidad en la combinación de voces. La desgarradora e intimista de Staley y la más melódica de Cantrell:

Posteriormente sacaron "Dirt". Misma música pero letras aún más depresivas y oscuras. Ya se empezaban a vislumbrar los problemas con las drogas de Staley. De forma indirecta, por las referencias implícitas a la heroína en varios temas, y de forma directa por la necesidad de suspender numerosos conciertos por los problemas de salud del cantante. De este trabajo, puede que el más grande, yo destaco algunos temas. El primero "Down in a Hole", uno de los mejores:

A partir de aquí, cambio de bajista, entra Mike Inez por Mike Starr (otro con problemas de drogas) y lanzamiento de álbumes como "Jar of Flies", con grandes temas como "I Stay Away", o el homónimo LP "Alice in Chains" con "Again". En este ultimo trabajo, quizá más lento, Staley pone casi todas las letras. Tiene bastante reconocimiento a pesar de que el mal estado físico del cantante les dificulta mucho promocionarlo en directo. Hacen un "MTV unplugged" en el que se aprecia claramente el deterioro que sufre este hombre:

Entonces la debacle. Última creación del grupo con aportación de Staley, el premonitorio "died", y su triste final en abril de 2002 supuestamente por sobredosis de speedball, combinación de heroína y cocaína.

Muchos pensamos que era el fin de la banda, como pasó con Nirvana. Los miembros empezaron con proyectos en solitario. Cantrell sacó "Degradation Trip" en homenaje a su compañero fallecido y afortunadamente se pudo ver que la esencia de Alice in Chains continuaba. "Angel Eyes" lo acredita:

Se trataba por tanto de encontrar un vocalista para complementar a Cantrell. El elegido fue William DuVall de "Comes With The Fall" y en 2009 apareció el disco "Black Gives Way to Blue". A mi me parece bastante bueno. Puede que la voz de DuVall no sea tan personal como la de Staley, pero se complementa bastante bien con Cantrell quién por otra parte mantiene la visión y calidad musical de siempre. Un temazo descomunal es "Your Decisión":

It was therefore to find a vocalist to complement Cantrell. The choice was William DuVall of "Comes With The Fall" and in 2009 appeared the album "Black Gives Way to Blue". To me it seems pretty good. DuVall's voice may not be as personal as Staley, but is complemented quite well with Cantrell who otherwise maintains the vision and musical quality as always. A hulking great song is "Your Decision".

 En 2011 de nuevo la tragedia. Muerte del anterior bajista, Mike Starr también por drogas. Luego intentaré debatir este tema.

Tienen dinero y fama pero son profundamente infelices. Me llama la atención, en su patetismo,  una frase atribuida a Staley que decía más o menos que la droga había comenzado siendo su compañera, le había dado el entorno en el que lograr inspiración, pero a cambio le había acabado haciendo su esclavo. Pagan un alto precio. Volveremos luego, como digo, a este tema.

Después de escuchar todo esto, opino que mientras Cantrell continúe Alice in Chains seguirá haciéndonos disfrutar. Él, verdaderamente, es el insustituible.

 R: El grunge no es precisamente mi estilo favorito. El objetivo que busca es deprimir y en mi caso lo consigue. Resulta difícil incluso en el caso del más comercial en cuanto a estilo, Pearl Jam, escuchar un disco de principio a fin sin sensación de desasosiego. Yo busco con la música disfrutar y dejo que sea la vida real la que me deprima si acaso. Por eso, más allá de temas puntuales, intento descartar este género y prefiero quedarme con coetáneos como Red Hot Chili Peppers u otros. Lo más destacable no obstante de este estilo de rock, y como tal lo recalco, es la personalidad y la calidad de los vocalistas, Kurt Cobain, Eddie Vedder, Chris Cornell y el duo Staley-Cantrell sobretodo.Como de Alice habéis puesto las que más me gustan, recomendaría para seguir con la fiesta "depre" "Fell on Black Days" de Soundgarden.


Eddie Vedder-Pearl Jam

 R: The grunge is not exactly my favorite style. The intended result is depressed and in my case it succeeds. It is difficult even for the most commercial in style, Pearl Jam, listening to an album from start to finish without feeling uneasy. Seeking to enjoy the music and let it real life that depresses me just in case. N: Yo sin embargo lo disfruto. Los personajes sufren y lo transmiten, del mismo modo que lo hacían Oscar Wilde o Franz Kafka, Van Gogh o Chopin. La vida les dota de una sensibilidad especial y les inmola para que los demás podamos disfrutar del arte que emana de como viven tal sufrimiento. Se autodestruyen, pero a cambio de una vida terrenal corta consiguen la inmortalidad. Esto pasa en el rock con todo el grupo de los 27, Janis Joplin, Hendrix, Jim Morrison, etc. El papel de las drogas y el alcohol en esto da para un buen debate. Por una parte les destruye físicamente, pero por otra, les permite alcanzar estados mentales que llevan al máximo su expresión artística. Volviendo a ejemplos clásicos, esto ya ocurrió en su día, y en relación al alcohol, con genios como Edgar Allan Poe o  Toulouse Lautrec.

N: I though I enjoy it. The characters suffer and pass, which just as did Oscar Wilde or Franz Kafka, Van Gogh or Chopin. Life gives them a special sensitivity and sacrificed them so that others can enjoy art emanating from such suffering as they live. Self-destruct, but instead of a short earthly life achieved immortality. This happens in the rock, with the entire group of 27, Janis Joplin, Hendrix, Jim Morrison, etc. The role of drugs and alcohol in this, gives us for a good debate. Con respecto a los temas de Alice que has incluido, echo de menos "Love, Hate, Love". Es una canción en la que el sufrimiento del interprete le hace pasar del dolor a la ira desgarradoramente. La parte final es grandiosa con la guitarra compartiendo el sufrimiento del vocalista. Es de lo mejor de Staley a mi modo de ver.

C: A mí tampoco me gusta el grunge como tal. Es bastante simple musicalmente y a mi me gusta  más elaboración. Las letras me dan un poco igual porque no las entiendo, y casi, por lo que contáis mejor que sea así. Sí me ha interesado siempre el por qué de las muertes de esta gente en teoría exitosa. La búsqueda de respuesta en las drogas es un clásico que viene fundamentalmente de los 60, y  afecta a todos los estilos, desde la música electrónica de Depeche Mode, a los góticos The Cure, a los punk Sex Pistols...Hay muertes tan diversas como las de Morrison de Doors, la de Bonham de Led Zeppelin, la de Bon Scott de ACDC, la de Hutchence de INXS, o las más modernas de Withney Houston, de Amy Winehouse o incluso de Michael Jackson, muertes en las que sin saber exactamente las causas siempre aparece alguna relación con drogas o medicamentos En el caso del rock, se pasa de muertes por juergas descomunales, estilo Bonham, Bon Scott, etc a las muertes grunge debidas a estados depresivos de los protagonistas. No tengo muy claro el por qué de su sufrimiento, pero sí que las drogas les acompañan desde el principio, primero como algo que pueden controlar pero después como algo a lo que rendir tributo de esclavitud como decías. Estoy de acuerdo con N. Primero les ayudan, haciéndoles enfrentar sus miedos, proporcionándoles inspiración, pero luego les generan dependencia, deterioro físico y dolor hasta que acaban con su vida.
Con respecto a Alice in Chains, pasó esto con Staley y por desgracia, creo que ya no existe el grupo como tal. Esto se puede ver escuchando "love, hate, love" y haciendo la comparación con los temas modernos. Se han convertido en una especie de Jerry Cantrell´s band. Producto que suena bien, pero que es distinto al original.
