EL RAYO VERDE- THE GREEN FLASH

-Buenos días Tío Sam-dijo.
- Buenos días, querida hija.
-¿Cómo va, tío Sib?
- De maravilla.
- Helena- dijo el hermano Sam-, tenemos que ponernos de acuerdo contigo en algo que te interesa.
-¿Ponerse de acuerdo conmigo?¿algo que me interesa?¿que es lo que habéis urdido, tíos?- preguntó Helena Campbell, mirando maliciosamente, tan pronto al uno como al otro.
-Creo que conoces a un joven llamado Aristóbulos Ursiclos...
-Sí, le conozco
-¿Te desagrada?
-¿Por qué tendría que desagradarme, tío Sam?
- Entonces, ¿te gusta?
- ¿Por qué tendría que gustarme, tío Sib?
 -En fin, mi hermano y yo después de varias reflexiones hemos pensado proponértelo como marido.
- ¡Casarme!¿Yo?- exclamó Helena Campbell prorrumpiendo en una sonora carcajada, que resonó en las cuatro paredes del vestíbulo
- ¿No quieres casarte? preguntó el hermano Sam. ¿pero nunca? dijo el hermano Sib.
-Nunca, nunca queridos tíos..al menos que haya visto...
¿El qué? exclamaron los hermanos Sam y Sib.
- Hasta que haya visto el rayo verde.

(Julio Verne.- El Rayo Verde).

-Good morning Uncle Sam- she said.- Good morning, dear daughter.-How's it going, Uncle Sib?- Great.- Helena- said Sam, - we have to agree with you on something that interests you.-¿Agree with me? what is it that you have contrived, uncles -? Asked Helena Campbell, looking at them.I think you know a young man named Aristobulos Ursiclos ...Yes, I know him-¿Do you dislike him?Why would I dislike him, Uncle Sam?- So do you like him?- Why would I like him, Uncle Sib?

Este relato de Julio Verne está inspirado en una antigua leyenda de las Highlands escocesas según la cual, la persona que sea capaz de ver ese rayo, último destello del sol tras la puesta , jamás se equivocará en cuestiones del corazón. Es un fenómeno meteorológico muy difícil de ver, ya que tienen que darse unas especiales circunstancias atmosféricas y se tiene que estar en un lugar privilegiado para verlo. En el relato de Verne, la protagonista Helena Campbell, enamorada de las leyendas de su país, Rob Roy y Diana Vernon, Flora McIvor, Robert Bruce o William Wallace,  se niega a casarse hasta que vea ese rayo, ya que ello le ayudará a decidir quién es su compañero ideal. Comenzarán así una serie de peripecias que la llevarán a recorrer Escocia junto a sus dos tíos tutores que se desviven por todos los caprichos de la chica en su afán de verla casada con el candidato que ellos han elegido. 

Dejando al margen la leyenda, parece ser que el rayo verde no es un mito; existe y de hecho hay algunas fotos en internet. No se si todas serán verdad, pero hay alguna espectacular.

This story of Jules Verne was inspired by an ancient legend of the Scottish Highlands. If a person is able to see that lightning, last gleam of the sun after sunset, never go wrong in matters of the heart. It is very difficult to see this weather phenomenon, because it needs special atmospheric conditions and a very good place to see it. On account of Verne, the main character Helena Campbell, in love with the the legends of his country, Rob Roy and Diana Vernon, Flora McIvor, Robert Bruce and William Wallace, refuses to marry until seeing the lightning, because it will help her to choose her ideal companion. Searching it, she will begin numerous adventures across Scotland, embarking on it her  two uncles. They only want to see her married with the candidate they have chosen for her.
Leaving aside the legendand the tale, the green flash is not a myth; it exists and there are some photos on the internet. I don´t know if all are true, but there are some spectacular one.

Hay gente que si parece en su vida haberse encontrado con este maravilloso rayo verde. Os voy a presentar a dos parejas:

There are people that it seems to have met this wonderful Green flash. Let me introduce you to two couples:
 

La primera de ellas es la formada por Ian y Larissa Murphy. Esta pareja, como muchas otras, se conoció en la universidad. Decidieron casi inmediatamente casarse en cuanto terminasen sus estudios, pero, fatalmente, un día cualquiera, camino al trabajo, un empleo a tiempo parcial con el que pretendía pagarse la boda, Ian sufrió un accidente de coche que le dejó daños cerebrales muy severos y permanentes. Larissa se trasladó inmediatamente a vivir con él a casa de sus padres. Cuando tras muchos cuidados y esfuerzos consiguió que se comunicara mínimamente, decidió continuar adelante con el matrimonio. Dado el estado de Ian, hubo que pedir permiso al juez; y este se lo concedió diciendo: "ustedes ejemplifican el amor total. Creo que el matrimonio no solo les beneficiará a ustedes sino a toda la comunidad. Espero que todos en la ciudad vean lo que es el amor por los demás".  
The first one is formed by Ian and Larissa Murphy. This couple, like many others, met in college. They decided almost immediately to marry  but, fatally, one day, going to work, a part-time which meant paid wedding, Ian suffered a car accident that left severe and permanent brain damage . Larissa immediately moved to live with him in his parents' house. When after much care and effort, they got to communicate minimally, and they decided to go ahead with the marriage. Given the state of Ian, they had to seek permission from the judge who granted it saying.. "You exemplify the total love I think your marriage will benefit not only to you but to the whole community.  I hope everyone in the city to see what which is the love of others."

 

La segunda es la formada por el fotógrafo Angelo Merendino y su esposa Jennifer quién fue diagnosticada de un incurable cáncer de mama. Ante la irreversibilidad del problema, quisieron disfrutar hasta el máximo de lo que les quedaba juntos. Fotografiaron sus mejores momentos quedando también retratados los terribles estragos de la enfermedad. En estas fotografías se aprecia, que, si bien la enfermedad iba consiguiendo avanzar, en ningún caso lograba acabar ni con el amor ni con el optimismo de la pareja. El reportaje, que iba a ser un recuerdo familiar para Angelo, se convirtió en fenómeno viral cuando a petición de Jennifer, se publicó en la red. Poco después falleció.
The second is formed by photographer Angelo Merendino and his wife Jennifer who was diagnosed with an incurable breast cancer. Given the irreversibility of the problem, they wanted to enjoy to the maximum of what they left together. They photographed his best moments, being also portrayed the terrible ravages of the disease. In these photographs can be seen that, although the disease was getting forward, in no case it could end up with either the love nor the optimism of the couple. The report, which was to be a family keepsake for Angelo, became a viral phenomenon when at the request of Jennifer, was published on internet. Shortly after she died.

Una frase que se atribuye al actor Tim Robbins dice algo así como que los superhéroes actuales son personas sin superpoder alguno. Larissa y Angelo son ejemplos. Personas así, como el rayo verde, son muy difíciles de encontrar. Yo creo que ellos mismos son el rayo verde.
A sentence attributed to Tim Robbins says something like current superheroes are people without any superpower. Larissa and Angelo are examples. This people, as the green ray, are very difficult to find. I think they themselves are the green flash.
