EL TAXI.- THE CAB

Hot day in September in Paris. Edmond boarded his cab, a modern and shiny Renault AG and set out to perform as did every day him work, but for him, as for the rest of taxi drivers in the city that day was going to be special. Turned to La Place des Invalides to gather customers and there, arriving, next to the plaza hotel, already he could see young people who would be him first passengers. They were three: Adrien, Etienne and Marcel, about 18 years old. The first two were euphoric, talking about war, patriotism, honour. ... . The third was concentrated to writing a letter. the addressee would be their parents who lived in Toulon. Edmond was like them, swollen of patriotism...

They reached their destination. By the sound of bombs, they knew that they had arrived at the front. They were in battle of the Marne in that call Great War which, unfortunately, was not the last but the first world war. When Adrien get off, asked Edmond to send his letter to mail. Edmond fulfilled his assignment, but unfortunately, when the mother of Adrien was reading his letter full of optimism and with the promise that by Christmas he would have returned home, a howitzer had finished with his life, sad fate shared by many others.

Otros setecientos taxis tuvieron historias similares aquel día.
Other seven hundred taxis had similar stories that day.

And now there were Marcel, Etienne and the old taxi driver Edmond, at the Hotel des Invalides, 50 years later recalling that trip of 37 km of lights out, of fear of hidden in the euphoria, and recalling  Adrien, fallen in the battle, which was dubbed battle of the taxis, because these vehicles were those who faced with a shortage of means, they were forced to move troops to the front helping to win this battle.

After that emotional meeting, the already elderly Edmond took a taxi to go home. He would have liked to be the driver, but in him old Renault...

Brave French of this story. Serve this as a modest tribute to them in these difficult moments after the terrorist barbarism.

Def Leppard e Histeria..
I leave you with some music. This time hair metal of the 80s. Probably one of the best band of the style and one of the best LPs of the genre: Def Leppard and Hysteria.

BELLA PRINCIPESSA

(Gustave Flaubert)

Art is, of all the lies, that fools less.
(Gustave Flaubert)

From WikimediaCommons
Endless hours was Bianca posing, despite the good-natured, attractive and good conversationalist who was the painter. In addition it was gorgeous!... But anyway, better not think about that, said to herself. To their barely fifteen years she was ready to be married, and the portrait would serve to commemorate her wedding with Galeazzo, young military of good family,... and he was so handsome and attentive!. She was thankful to her father to prepare the wedding. The future appeared full of joy for her, especially when soon after the marriage she was pregnant. But life is sometimes cruel. He had complications in pregnancy, and although doctors tried everything humanly possible, she died a few months later, leaving the family devastated. Eventually, as always everything is forgotten and there was poor Bianca; immortalized in that picture within that book, on that shelf.

Pero su belleza no desaparecería sin más...
But her beauty would not disappear so easy...

It was freezing that day in January 1998 in New York, when Peter Silverman, art handler, went to the annual auction of the House Christie´s. He had arrived the previous day from Paris interested in a delicate and beautiful portrait. According to the catalogue was a 19th century german painting. Peter had a hunch with that picture. He believed that ¨Christie´s had valued it incorrectly and that opened to him great business opportunities. Following his instinct he pushed but failed its purpose. He could not reach the $20,000 offered by the ultimate purchaser. He was unfortunate, but he had no more budget. He would try to forget the portrait. There would be other opportunities...

But as fate is capricious, it turned out that a few years later, in a gallery of the 73 Street in New York, Peter returned to see how the beautiful young woman offered him again her best profile. There was that picture again and this time he didn´t let it escape. Hiding his anxiety he asked the price,  paid the $22,000 that they asked him and left the gallery with the portrait in an envelope under his arm, almost as if he had bought him a street artist.

When he arrived in Paris, and as still it did not seem possible that it was from the nineteenth century, he began consulting with various experts, and to his astonishment, they don´t only confirmed himself confirmed that it was from the Renaissance, but also signs began to appear it could belong nothing more and nothing less than Leonardo Da Vinci. The quality of the drawing, the delicacy of the lines, details in the pressure of the headband on the hair or the perfect delineation of the eye could be distinctive signs of genius. The detail that was made by a left-handed too. All available technology was applied: Carbon 14 to verify the age of the painting both as the support, high resolution cameras, infrared treatments corrections to view and compare with other paintings of genius ..; and nothing seemed to rule out the Florentine master and autor.

It lacked the approach through history. Who was that person? Why this picture was painted? The experts concluded through the hairstyle that matched Milan fashion from the late fifteenth century, time when Leonardo was in that city. For the clothes and the type of  picture they concluded that the model was high class and the portrait was part of a commemorative book, possibly a wedding, as was the custom among the wealthy. By eliminating potential candidates, he concluded that the model could be Bianca Sforza, Ludovico's illegitimate daughter, Leonardo´s mecenas. Everything matched. Leonardo again seemed to be the perfect candidate.

Discussions still, there are skeptics, but the fact is that Peter has received an offer of 80 million dollars that he has rejected. The table must be in the secret chamber of a Swiss bank waiting to leave again to light. I wish everything is resolved soon because the beauty of Bianca and work of genius, whoever may be, does not deserve to be there.

Curiosa historia. Casualidad y oportunidad para Peter. Inmortalidad para nuestra bella milanesa.
Curious history.  Opportunity for Peter. Immortality for our beautiful Milan girl.

Voces cuidadas y calidad instrumental. En este caso Von Hertzen Brothers, Opeth, Seventh Wonder, Sonata Arctica, y Poets of the Fall.

(Cinema Paradiso, 1988)
“Whatever you do, love it, as you loved the cabin of the Paradiso when you were a child.” (Movie Cinema Paradiso, 1988)

And there I was in the cemetery of Las Rozas in Madrid by visiting the tomb of the old Samuel. It is one thing that I used to do every once in a while, see the tombs of characters that although have nothing to do with me, if I have been curious their lives. The cemeteries have many taboos but are sites very interesting. They removed the stress of everyday life and make relative to the maximum the problems. In addition, remind us that no matter how large or small person you have always been you'll end up in the same way. It was an experience in its day to visit the grave of Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde or Edith Piaf in Paris, myths to whom fate, as if wanting to group beings of souls immortal and tortuous lifes, reserved latest nearest places in the cemetery of Pere Lachaise.

But let's go back to Samuel. This man was a Russian Jewish, naturalized American, which always was attracted by the world of cinema. He married the daughter of the owner of one and ended up working for Metro Goldwyn Mayer in Paris. He met the widow of Jack London and get the rights of their works. Was presented with the name of Samuel Bronston in the mecca of film and as an independent producer, he managed to make several films with that obtained success and fortune. But he wanted more, and put him eyes in Spain.

It was the ideal country to produce, many hours of daylight quality, varied landscape without large displacements, low wages and impossibility of strikes, willingness of the authorities to give permission, whether for sinking a ship in the port of Barcelona, to use the military.. and also the main thing: there was money. He came from American companies that had begun to invest in the improvement of relations between Spain and the United States. They invested but could not throw the dollars of Spain by the monetary policies of the time. The best way to get the money was in the form of films that with benefits abroad. All were beneficiaries, and the Spanish people were also.

Samuel loved the big films. Arrived well blockbusters as King of Kings, with our beauty Carmen Sevilla learned without comprehension their phrases in english and driving crazy the americans gallants. The Fall of the Roman Empire, with decorated immense, 55 days at Peking, set China on the outskirts of Madrid and, above all, El Cid, with Charlton Heston, the actor most quoted; and Sofia Loren, of beauty so staggering that achieved admit its refusal to aging in the movie to the pace of the story therefore still harshly criticized. What those critics didn't realice were that the italian diva was going to avenge refusing to grow old in real life too. The next time that you watch these movies, you know that the sun that lights up is not that of Rome, China or Jerusalem. It is Madrid, Alicante, Cuenca or Valencia. And thanks to these movies we were able to see in the now closed pub Oliver, or in Chicote, or in the Plaza de Las Ventas, such as Ava Gardner, Sophia Loren, John Wayne, Charlton Heston or Frank Sinatra were real human beings that spoke spanish after the second drink.

Samuel siempre estuvo agradecido a España.
Samuel was always grateful to Spain. He said that it was his house and in fact his ashes are here. Serve this narrative as a small tribute. Some music as always:

The one that is used to traveling, knows that it is always necessary to set off some day.

Paulo Coelho

Ramon came to the first class deck. Despite the cold, it seemed incredible to him the view of the vastness of the Atlantic which was enjoyed better there. They were already near to New York and he didn't want to miss anything of all that the trip offered. He was 71 years old, he considered that it had already done everything in life and he just wanted to enjoy life. The trip he had designed was not bad. He had been traveling through France and Germany. He returned to Paris to travel United States and arriving there, his idea was to cross this huge country and then get back to his native Uruguay.

A couple of noisy young people disturbed their peace, but he did not care because reminded himself  40 years ago. They had already spoken on the ferry that had led them to the ship at Cherbourg. Pepita and Victor, spaniards who enjoyed honeymoon with a great designed journey. More than one year's duration which had led them to tour Europe to its ends with journey on the Orient Express included, fun nights in Monte Carlo, tours of Italy, France too...; the curious thing about the case is that the only condition that their wealthy families and more specifically Doña Pura, Victor´s mother, had placed them is not to travel in a ship. So when they decided to go by boat to New York, after seeing an advertisement for the trip at a restaurant, they left a servant in Paris with letters written by them describing how wonderful of that city with the task to mail their family every 15 days and they got ready to board despite the protests of Fermina, old maiden who went with them.

Ramon liked talking to Fermina. Similar characters but different lives to be told. With her he had in common him fear of boats although the reasons for their fears were different. Fermina, came from Regueros Street in Madrid, was afraid because she had never embarked and terrified her the immensity of the sea. The bad feeling that this trip produced to Doña Pura also affected her. In the case of Ramon, who had sailed so much, him fear came because he had already suffered a shipwreck in his youth in the Río de la Plata and still he had nightmares about it.
In this case however there was nothing to fear, they said to thmeselves. They were in the best boat, the most modern, the most luxurious, the largest. They were aboard the unsinkable Titanic.

When as everybody knows the boat sank, Fermina and Pepita were saved because they were able to get into the lifeboats. Victor and Ramon refused despite they have right for being passengers of first class. Victor, after wish his wife a good life before help her to get on the boat, was lost in the crowd and nobody knows about him until him body was found. In the case of Ramon there are eyewitness of him struggle. He remains until the end on the deck, helping everybody, and at the last moment, he was launched to the water on a hammock to avoid the possible contact with the icy waters. He resisted almost three hours and get to see even the Carpathia coming closer, but his life, like his clock stopped few minutes to 5 without being rescued. Serve this story as a modest tribute to this men and others who died helping others.

Very sad it was also when from Halifax called Doña Pura to give the terrible news. She couldn't believe it because his son was in Paris and in fact she had just received a letter. She was  devastated by the cruel reality. Life is a journey that you never know when it will end and sometimes it ends with a trip.

Bonita y triste historia.
Beautiful and sad story. In fact I like it more than the invented Cameron´s film. Dig in it. You will find online books, articles in newspapers, etc. I specifically recommend a podcast in the section documents RNE Memorial of the 100th anniversary of the wreck.

MUCHACHA VELOZ- FAST LADY

Arturo Graf (1848-1913). Escritor y poeta italiano

The madness and sanity are two neighbouring countries, of borders so undetectable, that you can never know for sure if you're in the territory of one or in the territory of the other.
Arturo Graf (1848-1913). Italian poet and writer

He took the envelope with the $600 of the luxurious bathroom of the hotel room and decided to go to your next appointment to the Belaggio. Other 600 waited her for another hour of her services. It came even to charge 6000 for a whole day, but the money did not care. The really important thing was calm that strong internal momentum that took her to want to get out of its stable real life of wife and mother, and living this way, without limits, those unbridled passions that arose her and that with her real identity was impossible to carry out. Kelly always had wanted to be the best in everything she does and now intended to become the best company girl of Las Vegas. She had already become the number two in the ranking of the most popular and best paid. She wanted to reach the number one. It was very competitive.

Sidney.

Sidney. Summer of 2000. Women's final of the 1500 m. Suzy arrives with the second best time of the year and she is favorite. There were her third games, after Barcelona and Atlanta and know that it will be the last, so it is also her last chance to achieve the long-awaited medal. More than one hundred thousand people contemplate the spectacle in the stands, millions on television. Although the race begins and develops well for her, going first until the last lap, she collapses and begins to see how she is surpassed by several athletes. Her extreme competitiveness, in this case poorly understood, leads to a bad decision. Dropped, simulating an injury. Too much pressure blocked her legs and her brain collapsed. After that she will be ashamed and will confess his action being hardly criticized. During a time she was not able to leave her house.

I love the story of Kelly and Suzy by the fact that they are the same person. Suzy Favor is the real name of an american olympic athlete who was marked by that failure in the competition despite multiple previous successes. When that happened she felt so frustrated, ashamed and repentant that he entered in a phase that was understood to be depressive because she was forced to receive treatment. However the treatment exacerbated her true mental problema, hidden until then, bipolarity, and that has increased its manic or moments of euphoria, emerging as a secundary effect an intense sexual appetite. Thus was born Kelly, the scort from Las Vegas, alter ego of Suzie, the athlete who prefers to live a madness that enthused her to a reality that fell it; maybe it was simply as a mechanism of defense of his mind to that reality. In any case, she  fought her demons and decided to live with intensity and exceed the limits. The less frequent in this world is to live, most of the people only exist. This is not the case of Suzie, and thus my regards for her. I recommend you deep in her story and that you bring forth your own conclusions.

"When you go through the forest, don't make noise. The Menk wouldn´t  like it and it may be the last thing you do"

Seeing those old photos of the Leica camera almost 50 years later, Yuri recalled that never had felt as frustrated as that day in January 1959 in which he had been forced to abandon the expedition that had so excited him; that had prepared, that would introduce him and his friends in those unknown and mysterious territories in so few people had been before. Monte Otorten in the Urals are waiting for them. However already on the train road to Ivdel, he had started to feel wrong and when he took the truck to Vizhai, starting point of the expedition, the symptoms are exacerbated with fever. Long walks on snow withstanding temperatures of up to-30 ° isn´t for anyone sick, nor for any group that had to take care of someone sick. Resigned had been separated from his friends and it had been prepared to go back to Yekaterinburg.

Reliving those moments, Yuri recalled as the "mansi", tribes of reindeer herders who lived in those desolate territories, had warned them of not entering in these remote areas. There were their sacred territories, its mountains of the dead; there were areas in which they rarely ventured and never at night, there were areas in which animals appeared dead and disappeared persons. They were the domains of a creature of the underworld known as Menk, the Yeti in the area, a rare kind of hominid over two meters, terrible predator able to even break the neck a bear with his bare hands, as people  said; a being that was announced with a faint whistle shocking making stop all the sounds of the forest. The best that people could do when that sound is heard was flee or hide.

Some members of the expedition had felt rather scared, but both Yuri, as Igor, like any other, had reassured them saying that it were not more than a legend. Perhaps that is the reason why he were still just as guilty. He had convinced them, he hasn´t been able to go by his flu and now him friends were all dead and mutilated, frozen in their underwear in the snow; one without eyes, another without tongue, fractured skulls, signs of struggle, all just a few metres from the tents where his belongings had been abandoned. The old camera had been witness to everything but failed to register what happened that last infernal night.

-I did not deserve to have saved more than the others-, has thought Yuri. And he thought it until 2013 when already elder died without knowing what had actually taken place with his friends.

This small story is based on the so-called case Dyatlov in honor of the guide and leader of the group. I would recommend that will deepen in the history and especially that you see the photos. In the initial few young mountaineers are arranged between jokes and games to start their expedition. In the end they are concerned, shot and maybe scared, such as fleeing. As anyone  know what has happened, emerged multiple theories and legends. The only thing certain is that the relief expedition found the tents ripped on the inside, as if the mountaineers, who were experts, had left scared without worrying about or to open the door, or step into the boots, or picking up the clothing. Something caused a panic so atrocious that made them act as well, and seeing how they were found dead after, the panic seemed more than justified.

"Friends: a family whose members are chosen at will."

Taking a last look at the room, Jesus remembered wistfully that first day of arrival at the pension of the General Peron street. He carried the basics in the suitcase, thinking they would go to his sister's house to get the rest if he liked what he saw. Since for work had come to Madrid, he had stayed at newly married sister´s house, but when she became a mother he had no place there. So he had accepted the offer of his friend Ignacio to move in with him to the central pension in wich he occupaid.

His story and that of Ignacio were parallel. They had excelled in his profession in his native Navarra and so, two leading companies had decided to hire their services. These companies are engaged in the same and made tough competition, which somehow made them rivals, but they never cared about it. They defend to death the interests of their companies, but their friendship forged in early childhood, in those evenings ballgame and several raids in the Roncal Valley, prevailed over all.

It was curious to see them leave each morning the pension, say goodbay, and take one north to his work and the other south to his. They stayed several years, but as everything has an end, now Jesus married and had to be separated. Ignacio continued some time in the pension, but nothing was the same.

Ignacio was Ignacio Zoco, and his company was Real Madrid. Jesus was Jesús Glaría and his company was Atletico de Madrid. They competed many years defending their colors. Their duels in midfield in those derbies in which who won were invited to dinner, were epic; as that 0-0 that must have been 4-4 in the Bernabéu Stadium, where they left embraced their partner Adelardo who had just lost his father and was facing from the field to the empty father´s seat in the stands.

They also competed in the Spanish team. They occupied the same position, and only can play one of them. None of this affected either a friendship that was like that evening shadow that grows as the day progresses.

Ahora los dos han fallecido. Puede que compartan pensión también allá arriba.
Now the two have died. Maybe they share pension up there.
